Free the Tipple - Fabulous Cocktails Inspired By Iconic Woman

In our stocking this Christmas, we received a kick-ass book so cleverly titled ‘Free the Tipple’. From Serena Williams to Marlene Dietrich and Virginia Woolf, 60 powerful women provide the inspiration for cocktail recipes in Jennifer Croll’s cocktail book and we love it because it showcases our favourite iconic women who are finally getting the boozy tributes they deserve.

It’s about time we raised a glass to this set of brilliant babes. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, they’ve blazed trails, changed the world, and frankly slayed. And now you get to drink cocktails inspired by them all – what a time to be alive!

We thought we would share with you some of our favourites recipes and maybe you could try them out on New Years Eve to bring some Girl Power to your party.

If America had a monarch, it would be Beyonce – they don’t call her Queen Bee for nothing. No matter how rich and famous Bey has become she has never forgotten her routes, so it is only right that a cocktail inspired by her should include a little bit of Bourbon (the most famous liquor from the South US).

Cloudy Lemonade

1 shot Bourbon

Garnish: Lemon slice

Serve in a mason jar full of ice

Frida Khalo

Known for more than her infamous unibrow, Freda Khalo is bold, colourful and fierce. She was also the life and soul of any party and was often found with a tequila in hand that is why she has inspired a Mexican fiesta hibiscus margarita.

1 shot hibiscus syrup

1 shot lime juice

2 shots silver tequila

Garnish: edible flowers

Serve in in a margarita glass over ice

Missy Elliot

With a sound that is unmistakable, Missy Elliot is clever, raunchy and confident. That’s why a sassy vodka cocktail has been created in honour.

1 tbsp cayenne

1 tbsp salt

1 ruby red grapefruit

1 1/2 shots vodka

1 dash maraschino liquer

Garnish: Grapefruit wedge

Serve in a tall glass with a salted rim

Vivienne Westwood

Godmother of punk, Westwood is still raising hell even after 40 years in the game.  Proud to be british, this spin on the classic Bramble is the most fitting tribute.

1 shot lemon juice

2 shots gin

1 shot creme de cassis

Garnish: Fresh mint

Serve over crushed ice in a rocks glass

Coco Chanel

No name is more synonymous with fashion than Coco Chanel who famously once said ‘I only drink champagne on two occasions: when I am in love and when I am not’. That is why her cocktail is a classic champagne cocktail with a little twist.

1 sugar cube

Cherry bitters

Garnish: Fresh cherry

Serve in a champagne flute and drop the sugar cube to the bottom

She is the epitome of style, beauty and no effs given and considering that this beauty comes from the island of Barbados it is no surprise that her cocktail is a twist of the tropical Pina Colada.

1 1/2 shot gold rum

1 1/2 shot coconut water

1/2 shot lime juice

1/2 shot agave syrup

1/2 shot pineapple juice

Garnish: Edible orchid

Serve straight into a cocktail glass

Celebrating iconic women and NYE at the same time? We’ll drink to that.
